Welkom bij Waterbuffelboerderij D'n Buff
Waterbuffels in de wei; dat zie je niet elke dag. Behalve in Boxtel! Hier runnen Frens en Wendy van Oirschot (beiden 48 jaar) en hun zoon Thijm (19 jaar en sinds 2022 in maatschap met zijn ouders) waterbuffelboerderij D’n Buff. Zoon Lau is 9 jaar en werkt dus nog niet mee. Samen melkt de familie 160 waterbuffels.
De boerderij, die sinds 1885 in het bezit is van de familie van Frens, stond al drie generaties in het teken van melkkoeien en varkens. Toen Frens in 2008 als vierde generatie aan het roer kwam, deed hij allereerst afstand van de varkens. De melkkoeien bleven nog een paar jaar, maar ook zij gaven Frens en Wendy steeds minder werkplezier. Daarom zocht het echtpaar uitdaging in een nichemarkt met meer toekomstperspectief voor de vijfde generatie. En zo maakten de Hollandse koeien in 2018 plaats voor exotische waterbuffels. Een goede zet, want het werkplezier is weer helemaal terug: “Het zijn super nieuwsgierige en eigenwijze dieren. Ze zijn aanhankelijk en willen graag geaaid worden. Dat is zo leuk, dat we wel eens vergeten dat we aan het werk zijn!”
Onze producten
“Onze waterbuffels geven 8 liter melk per dag. Hiervan maken wij romige en smaakvolle producten, waarin je de puurheid proeft. Probeer eens onze mozzarella (grote en kleine bollen), romige yoghurt of unieke buffaletta; een soort feta, maar dan gemaakt van buffelmelk.” Zelf eet de familie Van Oirschot het liefst de hele dag door hun eigen producten: “In de ochtend een heerlijk bakje yoghurt, tijdens de lunch een vers broodje mozzarella met tomaat en in de avond buffaletta met groenten of salade.”

Even tot rust komen
“Onze drachtige waterbuffels, die een kalfje verwachten, lopen buiten in de wei. Hier grazen ze van mei tot eind oktober en kunnen ze heerlijk badderen in de waterpoel. Vanaf de openbare weg is dit schouwspel voor voorbijgangers te zien. Wij horen vaak van mensen dat ze helemaal tot rust komen door onze buffels. Het bankje met uitzicht op deze weide is dan ook vaak bezet.“
Dicht bij de natuur
Wist je dat waterbuffels nieuwsgierig, relaxt en aanhankelijk zijn? Ook zijn de buffels bij D’n Buff nooit ziek en staan deze dieren dicht bij de natuur. Dat maakt dat Frens, Wendy en zoon Thijm genieten van ieder moment van de dag: “Werken met waterbuffels is het mooiste wat er is!”.
