We all got more conscious of the challenges our planet faces. And many of us want to be part of the solution rather than the problem.

Swapping the things you use daily for more eco-friendly variations is one way to do that. And electric toothbrush heads are ideal.

Because they tend to be made from different plastics fused together, toothbrush heads are very difficult to recycle. That’s why they aren’t accepted by most councils as part of their recycling programme.

But the good news is, there are more eco-friendly alternatives you can switch to.

So in this article, I will tell you which are the best sustainable toothbrush heads for your electric toothbrush.

How My Ratings Work

I am on a mission to help people to make decisions that are better for our environment.

To do that, in my sustainable toothbrush heads comparison, I have looked at different important criteria on which you can base your decision. These include results, value for money and sustainability.

I have looked at a variety of different options, which are all a more sustainable choice than traditional electric toothbrush heads and will suit different needs.

Each brand gets an overall rating, which is based on how they perform in each category.

All of the brands I recommend are based in the UK, which is important to me. I don’t think it would be environmentally friendly to buy a product that comes from the other side of the world.

While I try as many of the toothbrush heads myself, not all of them will work for me. Mainly because they are not compatible with my electric toothbrush.

I want to reduce the waste I produce, so buying a new electric toothbrush just to test some brush heads would be counterproductive. But at the same time, I want to give you a variety of options to make sure you will find the one for you.

I am looking at two different options. One are plastic toothbrush heads that you can send back to the manufacturer who will then recycle them.

The other options are bamboo toothbrush heads, which you can put on your compost heap or in the garden waste bin, after you have removed the bristles.

Both are more sustainable toothbrush heads than traditional ones, which are difficult to recycle and tend to end up in landfill.

Here we go… Find out which are the best sustainable toothbrush heads from UK-based companies.

#1 LiveCoCo (My Rating = 4.78/5) – Best Sustainable Toothbrush Head For Oral-B

Visit LiveCoCo Website

This UK-based brand is keen on reducing their impact on our planet, and so they have come up with their recyclable toothbrush heads.

All you have to do is send back the used brush heads, and they will recycle them. This way, the heads are kept out of landfill and our environment. You will have to pay postage, but given that electric brush heads aren’t very heavy, it won’t cost much.

Currently, LiveCoCo only has recyclable toothbrush heads that are compatible with electric toothbrushes with round brush heads, such as Oral-B.

However, the brush head fits my Oral-B electric toothbrush perfectly. I felt no difference during brushing compared to the branded Oral-B brush heads.

Afterwards, my teeth felt and looked clean. And I am not alone; others have said the same in their customer reviews. I opted for soft bristles, as I have read that this is what dentists recommend.

But LiveCoCo also offers their brush heads with medium bristles, if that is what you prefer.

So you get great results, but what about the price, I hear you ask. Well, compared to the branded Oral-B replacement heads, the LiveCoCo ones are better value for money.

And on top of that, you can send them back once you have finished with them, and they will recycle them. You don’t get that with the branded ones.

The cost of sending the brush heads back won’t be much and, because they are cheaper to start off with, it won’t break the bank.

But it will help our planet, and that is one of the most important things when you try to live a more sustainable life, right?

#2 Truthbrush (My Rating = 4.78/5) – Best Sustainable Toothbrush Head For Philips Sonicare

Visit Truthbrush Website

Another UK-based brand that wants to do their bit for our environment by creating eco-friendly dental care products. They have created sustainable toothbrush heads made of bamboo, which is sustainably sourced.

The bristles of their brush heads are made from castor soil. So while they are still plastic and can’t be recycled at home, they have been made from a plant-derived source, the castor bean.

At the moment, the Truthbrush toothbrush heads are only compatible with models from the Philips Sonicare range. And while many customers said the heads fit their Philips toothbrushes well, some have reported the contrary.

It might depend on your specific model, as there is a huge list of compatible models on their website.

The Truthbrush toothbrush heads only come with medium bristles. But the majority of the few reviews out there found they cleaned their teeth well.

With a lower price tag than the branded Philips replacement heads, these brush heads are great value for money. Because not only do they cost less, they are also better for our planet.

The bamboo is compostable, so you can throw it on your compost heap or your garden waste bin. But you have to remove the bristles first.

While these are made from a plant-based material, they are still plastic. And because of their size, they can’t be recycled at home, so you have to put them in your general waste bin.

But there is no viable non-plastic option for bristles at the moment, so these are the most eco-friendly you can get.

If you don’t have access to a compost heap or garden waste bin, Truthbrush will take back their heads and get them recycled. This means nothing of the head will go to landfill. That’s brilliant!

You will have to pay postage, but I think that’s a small price to pay for our planet.

These heads are a relatively new product, so there aren’t too many reviews of them yet. And while the ones available are a bit of a mixed bag, the more negative ones mostly about the head not fitting the toothbrush.

The company overall has good reviews, so I am confident that these toothbrush heads are good. They are definitely one of the most eco-friendly options out there at the moment.

#3 SURI (My Rating = 4.78/5) – Maybe The Last Electric Toothbrush You Buy

Best Sustainable Toothbrush Heads [UPDATED 2024] (8)

Visit SURI Website

This UK-based company intrigued me as soon as I heard of it. They only use plant-based plastic for their recyclable toothbrush heads, which is amazing. And they recycle them into new toothbrush heads.

All you have to do is put SURI used heads in their pre-paid compostable return envelope and drop them in a post box. That’s it!

There is no waste at all, and I love that. The heads are only compatible with their own toothbrush, which is a disadvantage if you have a perfectly functioning electric toothbrush already.

However, if you don’t have one yet, or your old one is on the way out, I would recommend the SURI electric toothbrush. Unlike other electric toothbrushes, it’s made of metal rather than plastic. But the best thing about it is that it has been made to last.

That’s because, if you sign up for the toothbrush head subscription, you get a lifetime guarantee on the toothbrush. They will repair it for free for the rest of your life.

Repairing is always better than replacing for our environment and our purse too. SURI actually designed it to be easily repaired. So even if it isn’t the cheapest, although similarly priced or cheaper than the big brands, it’s worth every penny.

It’ll be the last toothbrush you ever have to buy, which is brilliant value for money. And I found that it cleans my teeth very thoroughly. It has a polish mode, which I use twice a week, and it managed to get rid of some stains my old Oral-b electric toothbrush couldn’t shift.

My mouth and teeth feel and look clean after each brush. So if you are looking for a new toothbrush, then I can warmly recommend the SURI electric toothbrush, definitely one of the best sustainable toothbrush head options out there.

#4 Georganics (My Rating = 4.76/5)

Visit Georganics Website

This UK-based company is serious about reducing the impact their business has on our environment. With their Zero To Landfill scheme Georganics aims at ensuring that nothing they sell will end up in landfill.

That’s a philosophy that I love, and I wish more companies would adopt that approach.

They try to use materials that can be recycled at home as much as possible. And when they do use plastic, they take the items back for free and send them off to be recycled via TerraCycle.

And that also includes their own brand electric toothbrush and charger. All you have to do is to put your brush heads in a paper envelope, write “Georganics Freepost” on it and drop it in your nearest letter box. Simple!

One downside is that their brush heads are only compatible with their own brand electric toothbrush. If you are also looking for a new electric toothbrush, then this could be a great option.

Georganics has a lot of happy customers, who think that their toothbrush heads clean their teeth brilliantly. So you won’t have to compromise on results when you swap.

While their brush heads are cheaper than those of the bigger brands, their electric toothbrush is priced similar to an Oral-B or Philips.

So the initial investment is the same as for other brands, but then you can save money when you buy replacement heads.

If you are looking for an electric toothbrush or need to replace your old one, then Georganics is a good option to get more sustainable toothbrush heads.

#5 Booheads (My Rating = 4.74/5)

Booheads on Amazon

This UK-based company has put our planet at the heart of their decision-making process. That’s why they have decided to make bamboo electric toothbrush heads.

They have ones that are compatible with Philips Sonicare and Ordo Sonic electric toothbrushes, and since recently, also a new range for toothbrush heads that are compatible with Oral-b toothbrushes.

These are plastic though, not bamboo. However, the plastic is plant-derived, and you can send back the used toothbrush heads to them for recycling.

Regarding fit, the booheads brush heads get mixed reviews. Most people agree that at first they fit fine, but some have reported that after some time they start to wobble.

There is also a gap between the head and the toothbrush. However, this doesn’t impact on it working, so it just doesn’t look that nice.

Unlike many other sustainable toothbrush heads brands, booheads offers a good range of different brush types, including for deep cleaning and whitening.

They also have smaller heads for children or people with small mouths. Only for the bamboo ones though, at the moment.

The majority of customers are happy with their booheads brush heads, and they reported that they got great results.

However, some people said that they found it uncomfortable at first and needed to get used to brushing with a bamboo brush head. It probably should be said that bamboo brush heads are not for everyone.

The booheads bamboo electric toothbrush heads are cheaper than the branded Philips ones, so by swapping you can save money, not just reduce your plastic waste.

However, there is one point that is a bit disappointing about these brush heads. While the neck and head are made of bamboo, there is also a plastic connector in the neck.

This needs to be removed, alongside the bristles, before you can dispose of the bamboo brush head on your compost heap or in the garden waste bin. While this is a bit disappointing, the good news is that all the plastic that is used, bristles and plastic connector, are made from plant-derived sources.

So this plastic has been produced in a more sustainable way than traditional plastic, which is made of fossil fuel. And the bamboo they use is FSC certified. This means it was not grown on land that was deforested. That’s the most sustainable bamboo you can get.

All in all, the booheads bamboo brush heads are more sustainable than traditional plastic toothbrush heads. But keep in mind that the bristles and connector need to go into the general waste bin.

Conclusion

Best Sustainable Toothbrush Heads [UPDATED 2024] (11)

As you have seen, it is possible to buy more sustainable toothbrush heads that are better for our planet.

Wether you opt for bamboo electric toothbrush heads or recyclable brush heads, by swapping to a more eco-friendly option you can reduce your plastic waste.

Swapping also doesn’t mean compromising on results or spending more money. On the contrary, you often actually save money.

If you want to reduce your impact on our planet, then swapping to more sustainable toothbrush heads is a step in the right direction.
