Apple Brown Betty Recipe

This is one of my favorite fresh apple recipes! I have been making this for over 35 years now (wow, am I getting old!) There is not an apple season I do not make this terrific apple dessert.

I would call apple brown Betty the perfect autumn comfort food. There are several variations out there. While I will exchange oats for granola or muesli depending on what I have in the house, the basic recipe is always the same.

Remember that apples are a delicious source of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. Check out the apples from New York website for more apple nutritional information! And, here is a great article with all the benefits apples bestow upon our bodies!

New York State is the second largest apple producing state. We have apple orchards that surround the hunting land. We also have organic apple trees on the hunting land that hubby will harvest each fall. We have no idea what type of apples they are, but they are firm, sweet-tart, and very delicious.

Tips for making this Apple Brown Betty Recipe:

● This apple dessert tastes better when you use a sweeter apple. Some good choices are:
Source: US Apple Association that has these great tips and descriptions so you can choose the perfect apple for the “task”

● Crispin – Sweet, refreshing, and super crisp.
Best use: eating, baking, freezing, or cooking into a sauce.
Available year-round.

● Empire – From the Empire State, New York, these delicious apples are a cross between Red Delicious and McIntosh and were developed by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. This crisp, juicy apple has a delightful sweet-tart flavor and creamy white flesh.
Best use: all-purpose apple.
Available between September and July.

● McIntosh – Juicy, tangy, tart McIntosh has a tender, white flesh. Best use: snacking, applesauce, pies
Available September through May
Note: while I said sweet-apple I find McIntosh to be a great all-purpose baking apple that is widely available.

● 8 Tablespoons of butter = ½ cup = 1 stick in the United States

● The topping is traditionally rolled oats. I have experimented over the years and have also used granola OR muesli. You want one of the three to equal ½ a cup, NOT ½ a cup of each.

● Serve with vanilla ice cream when slightly warm. When serving cold, I find real whipped cream to be a great accompaniment!
